Follow These Five Flossing Tips For a Healthier Smile

Posted .

If you floss every day but still find that you are not cleaning your smile as well as you could, we can help you with your technique. Dr. Adam Vitelli offers these five tips to help you make sure you are flossing right:

1. The right product: When purchasing your dental floss, look for products that bear the ADA Seal of Acceptance. You are also welcome to visit Adam Vitelli Comprehensive Dentistry for product recommendations from the dentist. Floss comes in many options, including floss for sensitive gums and flavored floss, and you are sure to find one that works for your smile.

2. The right length: Your floss string should be about 18 inches long so that you can clean around each tooth with a fresh section of thread and spreading debris between teeth.

3. The right method: Using steady motions, work between and around each tooth. Your goal is to remove debris, not grind down your teeth, so remember to be gentle.

4. The right time: You should floss for about 2 to 3 minutes each session, addressing every area around each tooth. This includes behind the back row of teeth, where food particles like to gather.

5. The right support: Remembering to floss can be hard, so you may want to write yourself a reminder. You can even make flossing fun by listening to your favorite songs for the duration of your flossing (this can also help you make sure you floss for a sufficient amount of time). It’s also important to visit your dentist regularly so he can determine how well your flossing habits are working.
