How to Protect Your Enamel

Posted .

Your enamel is the white, visible portion of your teeth. It is a shell that protects the internal surfaces of the tooth. In order to have healthy teeth, you need to take care of the enamel. If you’re not careful, harmful substances can wear down the enamel and promote dental issues. So, to help you protect your enamel and keep it in tip-top shape, Dr. Adam Vitelli and our dental team have some tips for you.

First, brush your teeth twice a day. This can help you clean the enamel as well as strengthen it, especially if you use fluoride toothpaste. Make sure you brush for two minutes every morning and every night with a soft-bristled toothbrush. It’s also recommended to clean your smile with a brush that has been approved by the American Dental Association. That way you’re using a tool that is safe for your enamel.

Second, floss your teeth once a day. Flossing helps you clean away the food particles and plaque that cling to the crevices of the teeth and threaten the enamel on the sides of the teeth. If you’re not careful, these substances can create cavities in the crevices of your smile.

Third, have a tooth-friendly diet. It’s important to avoid eating acidic foods and drinking acidic drinks because acid wears down the enamel. If you have to drink an acidic drink, it’s best to do so through a straw so the beverage skips your teeth altogether.
